L Visa/Tourist Visa Extension in China

L visa

To travel in China, citizens of virtually all other countries need a visa. Getting a Chinese visa is easy for Western tourists, as you don't need an invitation letter, for example. Chinese Visa is cheap compared to other countries' visa fees. The usual tourist single-entry Chinese visa is valid for thirty days and must be used within three months after it was issued. In some cases, it is possible to obtain a visa on arrival to China, but it is strongly recommended to get your visa in advance.
A Chinese visa is a permit issued by the Chinese visa authorities to an alien for entry into, exit from or transit through China. The Chinese visa authorities may issue a Diplomatic, Courtesy, Service or Ordinary Visa to an alien according to his status, purpose of visit to China or passport type. The Ordinary Visa consists of eight sub-categories, which are respectively marked with Chinese phonetic letters C, D, F, G, J-1, J-2, L, X and Z.
Chinese (L) Visa is issued to an alien who comes to China for sightseeing or visiting family members/friends. Usually the validity of a single entry or double entry (L) visa is 90 days or 180 days from the date of issue. This means the holder of a Chinese L type visa shall enter China no later than 90 days or 180 days from the date of issue, otherwise the visa is expired and is null and void. The duration of each stay of an (L) visa is 30 days or 60 days, which means the holder of the visa may stay in China for up to 30 days or 60 days from the date of entry. The Chinese visa officer may extend the duration of stay if the applicant needs and requests a stay in China for more than 30 days.
If you have entered into China with a tourist (L) visa, and desire to stay in China longer than the valid period specified on your visa, you are required to apply for a new tourist visa or business visa. You may apply for a one-month zero-entry or single-entry L visa each time, or we can help you apply for a 3 months, 6 months or 12 months business visa.
To apply for a new L visa in China mainland (also called L visa extension. It can be extended twice, 30 days for each time), please check L visa to L visa.
If you want to stay longer, please check L visa to F visa.

F Visa/Business Visa Extension in China

F visa

Chinese Business (F) Visa is issued to an alien who is invited to China for a visit, an investigation, a lecture, to do business, scientific-technological and culture exchanges, short-term advanced studies or internship for a period of no more than six months. Usually, the validity of a single entry, double entry or multiple entries (F) visa is 90 days or 180 days from the date of issue. This means the holder of the visa shall enter China no later than 90 days or 180 days from the date of issue, otherwise the visa is expired and is null and void. The duration of each stay of a (F) visa ranges from 30 to 120 days, which means the holder of the visa may stay in China for up to 30 to 120 days from the date of entry. The visa officer may extend the duration of Stay if the applicant needs and requests a stay in China for more than 30 days.
If you have entered into China with a business (F) visa, and desire to stay in China longer than the valid period specified on your current visa, or desire to re-enter into China for business purposes in the near future, you are required to apply for a new F visa. You may apply for a zero-entry, single-entry, double-entry business visa with a valid period of no longer than 6 months, or a multiple-entry business visa with a valid period of 6 months or one year.
To apply for a new F visa in China mainland (also called F visa extension, F visa renewal) to stay longer, please check F visa to F visa.

Z Visa/Work Visa---Residence Permit

Z visa

Work Visa (also called "Z " visa or residence permit now) is issued to foreigners who will work in China for more than 6 months, and to their accompanying family members, i.e., their spouses, parents and children.
Any person suffering from mental disorder, leprosy, AIDS, venereal diseases, contagious tuberculosis or other such infectious diseases shall not be permitted to enter China.

To obtain a work visa from overseas Chinese consulates or visa office in Hong Kong, you are required to provide two basic documents: an Alien Employment License or a Foreign Expert Confirmation Notice, and a Z visa Invitation letter (called invitation letter). Your Chinese employer is responsible for obtaining the two documents from the local governments. Most of Chinese consulates accept faxed copies of the two documents, but it is advisable to check with Chinese consulates to see whether they only accept the originals. In addition to the two documents, a medical examination report could also be required in certain countries.

It is possible for foreigners who have entered into China with a tourist (L) or a business (F) visa to apply for a work visa (Z) in China. Chief Representatives, general managers and vice general managers with their names on their employer's business licenses are allowed to change their L or F visas into Z visas in China. Implementation on visa conversion may vary slightly in different cities/provinces in China. Please check with your local Immigration Department of Public Security Bureau for the relevant rules and regulations on visa conversion.

A work visa issued by overseas Chinese consulates normally is single entry and valid for 30 days after entry. A residence permit is required to apply for within 30 days after entry.

Note: The foreigner who does not apply for the residence permit within 30 days after entry will be fined 500 RMB per overstay day and the maximum fine is 5,000 RMB.

To apply for a China work visa, please check Residence Permit.

Visa FAQ---China L/F/Z Visa Extension and Conversion in Beijing

Visa FAQ

What is a Chinese Visa?
A China visa is a permit issued by Chinese visa authorities (Chinese Embassies, Chinese Consulates, Chinese visa offices or Public Security Bureau) to non-Chinese citizens for entry into and transit through China mainland (Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR have different visa systems). Citizens of most countries are required to obtain Chinese visas before entering China mainland. There are eight categories of ordinary China visas, which are respectively marked with the letters C, D, F , G, J-1, J-2, L , X and Z .

Do I need a Chinese visa?
If you want to travel to Mainland China, whether for business or tourism, you are required to have a Chinese visa obtained from a consulate in advance of your trip.
You are exempt from applying for a Chinese visa if you travel and stay only in Hong Kong or Macao for some days.

I got the China visa at the embassy. What does this visa mean?
CATEGORY: L (tourist visa or visiting relatives) - there are other types, such as F (for business or short-term study), X (student visa), Z (work visa)
ENTRIES: 01 - there are other types, such as 02, M (multiple) and 00.
DURATION OF EACH STAY: 090 - there are other types, such as 030, 060, 120, 180.
ENTER BEFORE: 23FEB2006 and ISSUE DATE: 23NOV2005: 3-month visa
---If you enter into China mainland before Feb. 23, 2006, you can use this visa. The 90 days of duration of stay is calculated right when you enter into China mainland through customs. Suppose you enter on Jan. 3, 2006, the visa is valid until April 2, 2006.
And if you want to go to Hong Kong and return to China mainland on Feb. 12, 2006, you cannot use this visa though it is still ENTER BEFORE Feb. 23, 2006. The only 1 entry has been used up the first time you enter. If it were a 02-entry visa, you would use it again.
With an F visa, what can I do in China?
F visa is issued to applicants who are invited to China for business, research, lecture, scientific-technological and culture exchanges, short-term advanced studies or intern practice for a period of no more than six months.
I am going to mainland China, then to Hong Kong and back to mainland China. Does this mean I must have a double-entry visa?
Yes. Although Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR are part of China, they have different visa systems from China mainland. Each time you enter into China mainland, one entry will be used up.
If I want to stay longer in China, can I have my visa done without leaving China mainland?
Yes.
If you are holding an L visa, technically you can have it extended twice, with 30 days of each time. If you want to stay longer even than that, you can have your China visa converted to an F visa through a Chinese visa agent.
http://www.visa100.org/
If you are holding an F visa, you can simply have it extended for another 3, 6 or 12 months.
The visas issued when you are already in China mainland have NO limitation of each stay. It means if you wish, you can stay as long as your visa duration without leaving. The entry (ies) is for your expected or unexpected travel. You don't have to leave.
F-visa holders can stay in China mainland without leaving for consecutive one year, which is calculated from last entry date.
I have a double/multi-entry Visa, but have 60 days limit for each stay. How can I remove it?
Double or multiple entry visas (either an L or F) issued by overseas Chinese Embassies, Consulates, visa offices usually have limitations of each stay. The limit can NOT be removed in China since December 2004. Instead you can apply for a new F issued by Public Security Bureau. Your previous L or F will be cancelled since you can NOT have two valid visas simultaneously. Beijing LEEO can help you do that.
I am not staying in Beijing. Can I still get my visa extended through your office?
Yes, definitely you can. We have many faithful clients throughout China. For the processing procedure, please refer to the following link.
http://www.visa100.org/
How can I get the "Registration Form of Temporary Residence", which is required to do visa extension or conversion?
Foreigners are required to register in the local police station within 24 hours of arrival. When you get a new visa or move to a new place, you need to redo it.
If you are staying at a hotel or hostel, the staff there will automatically do it for you. If you ask, they will give you the form. Please make sure they stamp it with the hotel or hostel' seal.
If you are renting an apartment or staying with your friends, you need to go to the local police station yourself. Normally, you are required to take the following documents:
Apartment rental contract
Passport
For the first time registration, you'd better ask your landlord to come with you. Or at least take one copy of the landlord's ID.
There is some company that intends to employ me. Can I avoid the Hong Kong visa run to get a Z visa? Or can I outsource the application to you to make it more efficient and quicker?
Yes, you can. Please find the documents required to do the whole work visa application (including work license, invitation letter, Z visa, Alien Employment Permit and Residence Permit for work application).
